Gibbs wants Ipswich stay

A major update has emerged bout Ipswich midfielder Liam Gibbs, regarding his contract situation at the club

What’s the talk?

According to Suffolk News, young midfielder Liam Gibbs is hoping to sign a new contract with Ipswich before the end of the month. He is due to become a free agent at the start of July and has been touted with Premier League sides Manchester United and Norwich.

The report claims that Gibbs wants to stay at Portman Road and is hoping to sign a contract extension, despite rejecting the club’s initial efforts to keep him. Gibbs made his first-team debut for Ipswich during the 2020/21 League One campaign.

Former Ipswich player and coach Kieron Dyer called Gibbs an “exciting” player back in 2019. He told TWTD, as relayed by Suffolk News:

“First-year Liam Gibbs has come in, he’s a very exciting player. He’s got a massive future as well, so they’re the two players I’d say to watch out for.”

Ipswich’s academy manager Bryan Klug also lauded the youngster. Last year, he told Suffolk News that Gibbs is a real talent.

“He is a goalscorer and he is a goal creator. He has got a real talent and one thing now is this football club presents opportunities to people like that.”

Cook will be delighted

Ipswich manager Paul Cook will be delighted with this news for several reasons. For starters, he could be about to retain a promising young player. Gibbs showed enough for Paul Lambert to hand him a League One start against Charlton in November 2020 at the age of 17, which suggests that he is a talented prospect who could play a big role for Cook in the future.

It might not be that Gibbs signs a new contract and immediately becomes a first-team regular next season, but he could be a player Cook looks to bring in as and when he feels he’s ready to cope with the constant demands of first-team football.

Another reason why Cook will be happy with this news is that it shows the club is heading in the right direction. Gibbs has decided that he would rather stay at Ipswich than join a Premier League side, with Norwich and United interested, and that is, hopefully, a sign that the club are on the right track as the youngster believes there is a pathway for him to progress at Portman Road.

This could pave the way for other talented young players to either stay at Ipswich or join the club as Cook looks to bring through academy products into the first team.

The 18-year-old could be ready for his first loan move next season. If he puts pen to paper on a contract extension then Ipswich could source him a loan to League Two or perhaps a foreign division where he can go and play regular senior football to aid his progression.

Whichever path they choose to help him develop, Ipswich and Cook should be thrilled that they’ve fostered an environment where an in-demand player would like to stay, rather than push to leave for pastures new.

Southampton make contact for Nuno Tavares

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola (via Sport Witness), Southampton have made contact to sign Nuno Tavares and are still in with a chance of securing the services of the left-back.

The Lowdown: Tavares appeared close to Napoli move

Tavares, who currently plays for Benfica in the Portuguese top flight, appeared to be closing in on a move to Serie A outfit Napoli.

The fee is said to be €15m (£12.9m) but, while the two clubs are coming to terms on an agreement, the negotiations have not been particularly easy.

The Latest: Saints still in the hunt

This latest report has revealed that the Saints are still in the hunt to sign the 21-year-old.

Napoli remain in pole position for his signature, but Southampton have contacted Benfica and remain in with a shout.

The Verdict: Exciting talent

Benfica have earned a reputation of churning out top talents in recent years, and Tavares is another exciting player. Even at his tender age, he has made 41 appearances for his club, scoring once and providing seven assists (Transfermarkt). Indeed, his performances have even attracted interest from Manchester United in the past (Gazzetta dello Sport via talkSPORT).

With Ryan Bertrand leaving St Mary’s this summer (southamptonfc.com), Ralph Hasenhuttl needs to bring in a new player for the left side of his defence. In Tavares, he would be signing someone who has many years left ahead of him for a relatively competitive fee, and it would seem a real coup if they can gazump European regulars Napoli to sign him.

In other news, Southampton eye this England international.

Junior selectors face problems

The junior selection committee is in a spot of bother as it prepares to announce the Pakistan ‘A’ team for the first four-day ‘Test’ against Sri Lanka ‘A’ starting at Faisalabad from Sunday

Sports Reporter12-Sep-2002The junior selection committee is in a spot of bother as it prepares to announce the Pakistan ‘A’ team for the first four-day ‘Test’ against Sri Lanka ‘A’ starting at Faisalabad from Sunday. The selection committee headed by Zaheer Abbas have made things complicated for itself when it named 14 cricketers in a list of 27 who have either represented Pakistan in Tests or one-day internationals. The problem now facing the selectors is how to accommodate them and those budding cricketers who have earned their nod after either performing at the junior level or excelling in regional cricket academies. The selectors are considering to pick teams on match-by-match basis in an effort to accommodate maximum cricketers, thus, ignoring the principle of consistency and passing on the message that every match could be the last for any youngster.Probables:(Tests and one-day internationals): Naved Latif, Faisal Iqbal, Taufiq Umer, Imran Farhat, Salim Elahi, Yasir Arafat, Mohammad Zahid, Danish Kaneria, Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan, Hasan Raza, Qaisar Abbas, Atiq-uz-Zaman, Azhar Mahmood.(Uncapped): Kamran Sajid, Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Najaf Shah, Junaid Zia, Umer Gul, Irfanuddin, Munir Ansari, Babar Naeem, Bazid Khan, Kamran Akram, Abdul Rauf, Asim Kamal, Amin-ur-Rehman.

Sky reporter shares Spurs news involving Aarons

Writing on Twitter, Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas has shared news coming out of Tottenham Hotspur involving Norwich City star Max Aarons.

The Lowdown: Aarons back on the radar?

Alongside problem positions like centre-half, Spurs have also been touted to move for a new right-back this summer if defender Serge Aurier leaves north London.

Reliable correspondent Alasdair Gold recently explained that Tottenham ‘will’ target a full-back replacement for the Ivorian if he does indeed depart (football.london), with a few names already linked.

Spurs have been touted with possible moves for Brighton starlet Tariq Lamptey (Sky Sports) and Turkey international defender Zeki Celik recently (Evening Standard).

The Latest: Sky Sports reporter backs Aarons interest…

As per Sky reporter Thomas, writing on social media, Tottenham have also reignited their interest in Aarons after the Lilywhites were heavily linked with a move last year.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-2/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

“Tottenham have renewed their interest in Max Aarons this summer,” explained Thomas on Twitter.

“Joining the growing list of clubs chasing the Norwich right-back.”

The 21-year-old is seen as a solid alternative to fellow target Lamptey, with Brighton thought to want as much as £50 million for the latter man’s signature.

By comparison, the Canaries are said to value Aarons in the region of £30m.

The Verdict: Do it Paratici…

Club managing director Fabio Paratici, who has now been charged with developing the club’s sporting operations, simply must target Aarons if Aurier does leave this summer.

He played a key role under Daniel Farke, helping Norwich bounce straight back to the Premier League whilst starting 45 Championship matches and providing a real threat going forward.

The youngster even averaged the same amount of key passes per 90 at Carrow Road last season (1.4) as superstar Harry Kane did in the Premier League (WhoScored).

At £30m compared to Lamptey’s possible £50m tag, it’s clear who the better option would be for Tottenham.

Different approaches for Ponting and Warne

MELBOURNE, Oct 29 AAP – Key Australian players Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting showed differing approaches today to the punishing schedule of international cricket which awaits them.

Roger Vaughan29-Oct-2002MELBOURNE, Oct 29 AAP – Key Australian players Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting showed differing approaches today to the punishing schedule of international cricket which awaits them. While Warne’s unprecedented fitness and his outstanding form meant there was no way he would miss the Pura Cup match against Tasmania from tomorrow, Ponting will rest.Warne was super-keen to play because his friend and team-mate Darren Berry will become Victoria’s most-capped player.New Tasmanian coach Brian McFadyen said he had been hopeful Ponting would play, but the Australian Cricket Board asked for the national one-day captain to have some time off.”It’s disappointing, we’d love for Ricky to play,” McFadyen said.”We’re hopeful he’ll be available when we play Queensland between the first and second Tests.”Ponting needed surgery in June to help fix a stress fracture in his left foot.Warne, on the other hand, has regenerated his career after losing weight through a dedicated fitness regime.Australia’s top cricketers will soon start seven months of Tests and one-dayers, including the Ashes series and the World Cup.Warne was man of the series in Sri Lanka and Sharjah against Pakistan, with 27 wickets in three Tests. When asked if he had second thoughts about playing in this match, Warne replied: “Obviously when it was 53 degrees in Sharjah.”For me, I know it’s important just to keep bowling.”I think it’s up to the individual – if they want to play that’s good, if they don’t then that’s cool as well.”I don’t think it should be held against anyone.”Warne would also be anticipating a spin-friendly wicket towards the end of this match. The MCG pitch is unusually dry for this time of year and it should be a good batting track early in the match.Another obvious change will be the arena, with some of the Ponsford Stand missing. This will be the first event at the ground since redevelopment work started late last month.”You can actually see the Melbourne skyline, it’s a good little feel, a few of the boys said there should be a hill there,” Warne said.Warne will captain Victoria for the first time in three years, having regained the spot under new coach David Hookes. While delighted to be in the side when Berry sets the all-time Victorian record with 125 caps, he regrets their never having been together at Test level.”Darren Berry can pick what I bowl in my run-up – anything new, he knows exactly what I’m doing,” Warne said.”It’s probably a bit of a tragedy he’s never had the opportunity to play at higher honours.”If we didn’t have great keepers such as Ian Healy and Adam Gilchrist, he probably would have played 100 Tests by now for Australia.”Teams (12th men to be named):VICTORIA: Shane Warne (capt), Jason Arnberger, Darren Berry, Will Carr, Matthew Elliott, Ian Harvey, Shane Harwood, Brad Hodge, Mathew Inness, Nick Jewell, Jon Moss, Graeme Rummans.TASMANIA: Jamie Cox (Capt), Sean Clingeleffer, Graeme Cunningham, Gerard Denton, Michael DiVenuto, Michael Dighton, Shane Jurgensen, Daniel Marsh, David Saker, Shannon Tubb, Shane Watson, Damien Wright.

Chris Waugh drops Newcastle transfer update

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has dropped an exciting Newcastle United transfer update which will surely excite Magpies fans.

What’s the story?

Luke Edwards had previously claimed that Arsenal starlet Joe Willock is ready to leave his boyhood club to make the switch to Tyneside permanent this summer, with the Magpies “increasingly confident” of his desire to join.

The report added that a deal could then convince Allan Saint-Maximin to stay put at St James’ Park, with Bruce confirming during the Premier League season that he is keen on keeping the 21-year-old Gunners loanee at the club.

Since then, news has dried up over whether Willock will be moving to Newcastle this summer, but Waugh has now dropped an exciting update on the situation.

In response to a comment about how William Saliba’s potential arrival on loan would affect the Magpies’ chances of signing the midfielder for another season at least, the journalist said: “You’re right, two players from one Premier League club can’t be loaned to another. There is still a strange confidence/hope that Willock will return behind the scenes, though, which doesn’t marry with the budget information or everything else we’re hearing. Interesting to see what happens on that one.”

Newcastle fans will be excited

If you needed any proof of just how much Newcastle fans have fallen in love with Willock, and how much they want him to stay, then you only have to look at the St James’ Park faithful serenading him during his post-match interview against Sheffield United.

The 21-year-old has been a breath of fresh air for a Magpies side who desperately needed his fresh injection of pace and energy, and his ability to break into the box and time his runs have resulted in some match-winning contributions – he bagged an incredible seven goals in seven consecutive Premier League games, including dramatic equalisers against the likes of Liverpool and Spurs.

News that the Magpies retain a confidence behind the scenes that they can still sign Willock and bring him back to Tyneside this summer will be music to the ears of Bruce.

It’s exactly why Waugh’s update on Newcastle’s pursuit of Willock will surely delight the club’s fans no end.

Sheff Wed midfielder Windass ‘not for sale’

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Josh Windass is reportedly ‘not for sale’ this summer, as the Owls try and keep hold of one of their key players.

The Lowdown: Windass future was up in the air

Wednesday are back in League One after a hugely disappointing Championship season, with Darren Moore preparing for life in the third tier.

A host of established names have now left Hillsborough after their contracts expired, but one player who is still there currently is Windass.

The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to Millwall, having finished the 2020/21 campaign as Wednesday’s top scorer in the league, netting nine times.

The Latest: Owls’ stance remains strong

According to Yorkshire Live, the Owls are ‘adamant’ that Windass is ‘not for sale’, however, with the midfielder part of their pre-season trip to Wales.

That suggests it could take a hefty bid to prise him away from the club, although the report plays down other claims that the club values him at £5million – Transfermarkt have that number closer to £2m.

The Verdict: Owls must stand firm

Windass is one of Wednesday’s most important players and he has the quality to be a big performer in League One, given his performances in a struggling Championship side last season, not to mention scoring 21 goals in 104 appearances in the competition overall.

It may still be hard to keep hold of him if a sizeable offer from a club arrives, though, especially as he may feel he is in the peak years of his career and doesn’t want to spend them in League One.

If Windass stays put, however, it should aid Moore’s side’s promotion push hugely in 2021/22, saving the boss the difficult task of finding a replacement for yet another departing player.

In other news, Sheff Wed are reportedly eyeing up a summer move for one player. Find out who it is here.

Gayle powers West Indies to five-wicket win

When West Indies chased 291 with ease and won the fifth one-dayer by five wickets to take a 3-2 lead in this seven-match series, there was a sense of déjà vu that was unmistakable

Anand Vasu18-Nov-2002When West Indies chased 291 with ease and won the fifth one-dayer by five wickets to take a 3-2 lead in this seven-match series, there was a sense of déjà vu that was unmistakable. After winning the toss and sticking India in, the visitors watched in dismay as a breezy start was followed by a period of consolidation and a mini collapse. When their turn came, the men from the Caribbean followed almost the same formula, but with better results. Thank Chris Gayle and Wavell Hinds for that. There’s a theory doing the rounds that teams with weak bowling attacks and strong batting line-ups can easily get by if they keep batting second. There’s nothing in this series that has gone against that supposition. Both teams have powerful batting line-ups that can seemingly chase any score, and neither team would back their bowlers to defend a target that demanded that the opposition score at less than six runs an over. When faced with 291 to win from 48 overs, with the each innings being reduced to that figure thanks to heavy dew on the outfield early in the morning, the West Indian openers waded into the bowlers. Javagal Srinath came in for stick, being hammered for his lack of pace. Debutant medium-pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji did worse, being decimated in a three-over spell that went for 35 runs. The West Indies were off to a flyer. As if that were not enough, Sourav Ganguly’s bowling options looked absurdly limited in the face of the two-sided scoring rhythm the openers set. Gayle threw every bit of his powerful frame at anything as much an inch outside the off stump while his partner plundered runs through the on side. When the first wicket did come, it was too late, and thanks more to an indiscreet shot than a clever piece of bowling. On 80 (61 balls, 10 fours, 5 sixes) Hinds’ top-edged sweep only found Ganguly behind the stumps off the bowling of Sehwag. By this time, West Indies were 132-1 in the 17th over. The fall of Hinds’ wicket, followed quickly by Marlon Samuels’ fatal nudge to slip, spurred Gayle on to put his head down and grind the opposition for runs. Batting with panache, Gayle gave no chances, building a partnership of 83 for the third wicket with Ramnaresh Sarwan (34) before the latter gave Murali Kartik his first one-day wicket as he edged to slip.Shivnarine Chanderpaul was run out in the customary one mix-up per gameand then a piece of cruel umpiring made sure that West Indies lost threewickets in space of 21 runs. After hitting Harbhajan Singh straight outof the ground with the kind of power you see in baseball rather thancricket, Gayle attempted a more delicate cut shot. Although he missedthe ball by some distance, a fact corroborated by Rahul Dravid not evenappealing, umpire Asoka de Silva upheld Harbhajan’s polite inquiry. Gayle’s 101 (107 balls, 10 fours, 3 sixes) had, though, taken West Indies to 239 and within striking distance of victory.Ricardo Powell, with a few lusty strokes chalked up an unbeaten 30 (26balls, 2 fours, 1 six) while skipper Carl Hooper helped himself to arun-a-ball 21 as West Indies sprinted to victory with seven balls tospare.Earlier, India nurtured hopes of posting a 300-plus score as openers Sehwag and Ganguly got them off to a flyer. Sehwag, in particular, threatened to improve on his usual frenetic pace slamming 52 off just 39 balls with the help of nine boundaries and a six. When he fell with the score on 88 though, it was up to Ganguly to take on the role of wrecker-in-chief. The Indian captain (53) looked up to the task and notched up the 50th half-century of his prolific limted overs career before being bowled attempting to cut a straight one from Hooper.VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid propped up the middle-order with a partnership that brought some sanity to the proceedings. While Dravid looked to innovate, even unfurling the reverse sweep, Laxman was content to use conventional methods to keep the scoreboard ticking over.Although he made a sensible 36-ball 33, Dravid fell at a crucial moment, hitting Samuels to Gayle. The middle order stuttered ever so slightly and this was enough for thevisitors to ensure that their eventual target was merely challenging, rather than daunting. Mohammad Kaif (4) and Yuvraj Singh (15) were sent packing before they could stamp their authority on the game and it took a late slog from Sanjay Bangar (27 in 21 balls) to ensure that India posted 290 from 48 overs. But as has been the case repeatedly this series, that was simply insufficient to keep the dashers from the Caribbean at bay.
