Patterson-White turns the screw as Yorkshire face final-day battle

Nottinghamshire claim five wickets after declaration to close in on lead-extending victory

Liam Patterson-White claimed the key wickets of Adam Lyth, Dawid Malan and James Wharton during the third evening to keep league leaders Nottinghamshire on course for another Rothesay County Championship victory having set Yorkshire a 463-target at Headingley.Yorkshire made a confident start to their unlikely pursuit, reaching 114 for one after tea, with opener Lyth contributing 44.But Patterson-White’s left-arm spin was introduced, and after 11 balls he had removed Lyth caught behind cutting and Malan bowled for 12 playing back to one that turned appreciably. He later had Wharton lbw for 58.Struggling Yorkshire are aiming to avoid a fourth defeat in seven Division One games and closed on 176 for five from 56.3 overs, needing 287 more. Nottinghamshire are chasing a fourth win in seven. The visitors, for whom Dillon Pennington struck in the day’s final over, declared their second innings on 393 for eight midway through the afternoon, Joe Clarke top-scoring with a fluent 94 off 121 balls.Ben Coad finished with with three for 64 for Yorkshire as they were set the task of achieving the highest successful run chase by any side in first-class history at Headingley and also the county’s highest at any venue.Hampshire chased 404 to win here in 2006. In 2005, Yorkshire had chased the same target to beat Leicestershire at Grace Road.Notts started the day on 227 for three, leading by 296, with Clarke on 73 – his second half-century of the fixture. It wasn’t entirely plain-sailing progression for the visitors during the first half of a day interrupted by a couple of brief morning rain showers. But the hard work had been done with the bat during the afternoon and evening sessions of day two, putting them into a position where a defeat was highly unlikely.Clarke fell narrowly short of what would have been a deserved second century in as many matches, ending a 95-run fourth-wicket stand with Jack Haynes when he was trapped lbw on the back pad by Jordan Thompson – 268 for four. That wicket fell just before the new ball was taken, and just afterwards Haynes was brilliantly caught behind one-handed by Harry Duke for 43 off an inside-edge.Kyle Verreynne edged Jack White to second slip just before lunch, where Notts reached at 318 for six, leading by 397.The visitors became increasingly aggressive after the break, with Patterson-White and Lyndon James both holing out to mid-on and mid-off against White and Coad. The latter fell to an excellent diving catch on the run from White at mid-off as the score slipped to 333 for eight, a lead of 402.The lead was then boosted to the tune of 60 inside eight overs as Brett Hutton, in particular, and Pennington went in search of quick runs prior to a declaration.Hutton crashed four fours and two sixes in 44 not out off 26 balls as Yorkshire had to contend with the loss seam-bowling all-rounder Thompson midway through his 16th over with what looked like a side issue.Yorkshire will be sweating on his fitness ahead of the start of the Vitality Blast later this week. The White Rose then started their chase well.Opener Lyth’s 44 meant he followed Notts’ opener and captain Haseeb Hameed to the 700-run mark in Division One this summer. They are the two batters leading the way in the top-flight.Lyth shared 40 with Fin Bean, who was first to go for 17 when trapped lbw by Pennington.Either side of tea, the left-hander then shared 74 for the second with Wharton. However, Patterson-White’s intervention – getting Lyth and Malan – dampened any rising Yorkshire hopes, leaving the score at 132 for three in the 31st over.Wharton reached his fifth fifty of the season off 75 balls, but he followed not longer after as he was trapped in front playing forwards against the same bowler with the score on 160.Patterson-White finished with an excellent three for 25 from 14 overs, and Pennington had Duke caught behind with what proved the day’s final ball to further strengthen Nottinghamshire’s position.

E a etapa final?

Suyash: 'Coaches have told me just one thing – I have to hit the stumps'

The legspinner picked up 3 for 17 as one Punjab Kings batter after another fell to his googly

ESPNcricinfo staff29-May-20251:38

Aaron: Punjab Kings were in auto-destruct mode

After playing an important role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) comprehensive win over Punjab Kings (PBKS) in Qualifier 1 in New Chandigarh, Suyash Sharma said it was the clarity of plans that helped him.Sent in, PBKS were 59 for 5 by the time Suyash came on to bowl, and his two wickets in his very first over ensured there was no revival. With his second ball, a googly, he bowled Shashank Singh, who tried to heave it on the leg side and missed. That forced PBKS to bring in Musheer Khan as Impact Player. But Musheer, making his IPL debut, lasted just three balls as Suyash trapped him lbw with another googly. In the spinner’s next over, Marcus Stoinis tried a slog sweep, only to be bowled. Once again, it was a googly. Suyash finished with 3 for 17 from three overs, his best IPL figures, as PBKS were all out for 101.Related

“The coaches have told me just one thing: I have to hit the stumps, it doesn’t matter whether I bowl a googly, legbreak, or flipper,” Suyash said after being named the Player of the Match. “So I try to finish as many balls as possible on the stumps.”There was some help from the pitch. I think that’s why my googly wasn’t easy to pick.”RCB captain Rajat Patidar, too, spoke on similar lines. “The way Suyash chipped in, the way he bowled his line and length, that was incredible. As a captain, I’m pretty much clear about his bowling. He has to be, most of the time, on the stumps. That’s his strength. And his wrong’un is very difficult to pick for batsmen.”So I always give him clear ideas. I don’t want to confuse him. And I’m okay if he gives some runs.”

"You must be mad" – Liverpool star says it's "normal" to lose after Galatasaray defeat

Curtis Jones says Liverpool have to keep calm and carry on as Arne Slot’s side look to recover from back-to-back defeats in Saturday’s “huge game” at Chelsea.

The Premier League champions had made a storming start to the season, having won seven straight matches following their penalty shoot-out loss to Crystal Palace in the Community Shield.

But things have gone awry in recent days for the Reds, whose 100 per cent start to their title defence ended with Saturday’s last-gasp 2-1 loss away to Oliver Glasner’s Eagles.

That Selhurst Park setback was compounded on an ear-splitting evening in Istanbul as Liverpool’s first Champions League trip of the season ended in a 1-0 loss to Galatasaray.

Skipper Virgil van Dijk said “there shouldn’t be panic” after their second straight loss but stressed the need for improvement – sentiments echoed by midfielder Jones.

“It’s just part of the game,” the homegrown star said. “I say it all the time, you must be mad if you think you can win every game.

“You’d obviously like to, but the reality is these teams you play are world-class teams and it’s normal if you lose. It’s just how you bounce back.

“We’ve got a huge game again in three days, the lads have to stay calm.

“It’s part of it, it’s not fine that we lose but we just have to stay calm and it will all change. It will all change, of course it will.”

Victor Osimhen’s first-half spot-kick proved the difference against the sloppy Reds, who looked overawed at times on a hostile evening at rocking Rams Park.

The VAR’s intervention ended up with a late penalty won by Ibrahima Konate being overturned but even if Liverpool had converted it would not have papered over a poor performance.

Jones taking "positives" ahead of Chelsea clash

“If you look left and right, there’s world-class lads all around,” Jones told LFCTV. “But it’s not all about that, it’s about lads who want to go and win.

“It’s OK if you’re nice on the ball and stuff like that but you have to go and win, work hard and run more and that is what the lads know, of course they do.

“But as I have said already, there are games like this, and it won’t be the last as well.

“We would be mad to think we can turn up and just win these games. It’s about how much we want to win.

“Of course we’re upset, but there are positives to take and there is a game again in three days and we have to go again.”

He had another evening to forget.

Slot’s side stayed in Istanbul following Tuesday’s game, with Liverpool’s starters doing recovery work and the rest of the group training before flying back to Merseyside on Wednesday afternoon.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker is being assessed after being forced off with an injury that Slot says will rule the Brazil international out of Saturday’s trip to Stamford Bridge.

Lively forward Hugo Ekitike is also being assessed after limping off later in the second half.

Crystal Palace now eyeing move to sign "incredible" Marc Guehi replacement

Crystal Palace are now considering a move for an “incredible” defender as a replacement for Marc Guehi, with the England international expected to leave on a free transfer.

Palace looking to sign Guehi replacement

Guehi came very close to signing for Liverpool at the end of the summer transfer window, but the move fell through at the last minute, with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook revealing that Oliver Glasner played a major role in preventing the deal going ahead.

Despite the centre-back’s move to the reigning Premier League champions breaking down, he hasn’t kicked up a fuss, which led to high praise from England manager Thomas Tuchel, who said: “He looks absolutely fine and impressive on the field. He has had a good couple of weeks behind him on the performance side.

“He has continued like that in camp and he handles it [the transfer situation] with respect and with a brilliant attitude.”

More recently, the 25-year-old once again underlined his importance to the Three Lions by putting in a very impressive performance against Wales, keeping a clean sheet and assisting his side’s opening two goals, which helped secure a 8.2 SofaScore match rating.

The Palace captain, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, continues to attract interest ahead of next summer, with Real Madrid recently being named as potential suitors.

According to a report from We Are Palace, Guehi is expected to leave on a free next summer, with Crystal Palace not even attempting to convince him to stay anymore, and a Ligue 1 defender has been identified as a potential replacement.

Indeed, Toulouse’s Charlie Cresswell is now being considered as an option, having impressed Palace scouts with his performances in Ligue 1 last season, making 31 appearances as his side went on to secure a 10th-placed finish.

Cresswell is accustomed to playing in a three-at-the-back formation, which means he could be an ideal fit in Glasner’s system, and he is thought to have significant potential.

"Incredible" Cresswell could be solid Guehi replacement

At just 23-years-old, the Toulouse defender is at a good age to be a long-term replacement for Guehi, and he evidently has the talent to be a success at Selhurst Park, having put in some very impressive performances for Toulouse over the past year.

Stokes: 'We want to play exciting cricket, but it's all about winning'

Stokes has encouraged his players to be “smarter” in their decision-making and to get better at “soaking up pressure”

Matt Roller19-Jun-20253:16

Does England’s inexperienced bowling even the scales?

Ben Stokes had a simple message for his England team at Headingley: “It’s about winning.” Speaking ahead of Friday’s first Test against India, Stokes called on his players to show that they are capable of “adapting better” under pressure and prove that they have substance to underpin their attacking style during this series, as he looks to take England “to the next level”.England have won 23 and lost 12 Tests since Stokes took over from Joe Root as captain and now face a defining seven months, with five-match series against India and Australia. They have become the fastest-scoring team in the world and pulled off some historic victories, but Stokes wants his team to be more resilient when they are behind the game.”We have a team identity about how we want to go out there and play the game,” Stokes told the BBC. “We’ve had time to talk as a group, identify areas where we know that we are incredibly strong, but also identify areas that we think we need to get better at. One of those areas was adapting better when we’re up against the wall.Related

Rules of three: how England have dealt with a most thorny batting position

“We know that when we are on top of teams, we are very, very good, and where we maybe have let ourselves down in the past over the last three years is when we have been behind the game, we’ve not given ourselves the best chance of wresting ourselves back into the game, and that’s an area that we have looked at and know that we need to get better at if we want to end up being where we want to end up being as a team.”We still want to be known as a team who play an exciting style of cricket,” Stokes added. “[It’s] not that we never wanted to win every game that we played, but it’s changing what we say and how we say it. We want to be playing exciting games of cricket because we know that’s what brings the best out of individuals and us as a team. But it’s about winning.”England’s recent Test losses have often been thrashings, epitomised by a 423-run reverse in Hamilton at the end of last year, and defeats by 434 runs and an innings and 64 runs during their most recent series against India, 18 months ago. As a result, Stokes has encouraged his players to be “smarter” in their decision-making and to get better at “soaking up pressure”.”It’s just being smarter in those situations when it’s obvious that the opposition is on top of us,” he said. “We just felt like, as a team, that the area of improvement… is actually soaking up that pressure, and allowing ourselves a better opportunity to then apply the pressure back onto [the opposition] in the way that we know we can.”When we have lost, we probably look back on those moments [and think], ‘Could we have been a lot better at slowing everything down, and understanding where we are in the position of the game to then allow us to play in that natural way that we like to go about things?’ Having those reflective moments and honest conversations within the group is what can take teams to the next level.”Ben Stokes – “[It’s] not that we never wanted to win every game that we played, but it’s changing what we say and how we say it”•Getty Images

Stokes batted away any questions about the forthcoming Ashes series, insisting his team are focused only on India. He separately hinted at his desire to turn England into a great team. “We have been good over the last three years. I think results show that,” he told talkSPORT. “But we want to be better than good.”He is also expecting a stern challenge from India despite the recent retirements of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and R Ashwin. “The pool of talent that Indian cricket has is just ginormous,” Stokes said. “[They are] three massive names, three people who have done wonderful things for their country, but it’s not going to be any easier for us because those three big names aren’t here.”England announced their team on Wednesday, with Ollie Pope beating Jacob Bethell to the No. 3 spot in their main selection decision. “Having him at No. 3 since I’ve been captain, over a three-year period, averaging over 40, it speaks for itself,” Stokes said. “Scoring 170 in his last Test match [against Zimbabwe] has shown how well he’s handled that extra scrutiny.”Bethell is set to play for Warwickshire against Somerset in the County Championship from Sunday, while Jofra Archer – who has not played a Test match since early 2021 – will also make his red-ball comeback for Sussex at Durham. Stokes said that the prospect of unleashing Archer against India was a “very, very exciting” one.”Jof’s tracking really, really well to be available,” he said. “I know he’s been absolutely desperate to play Test cricket again for England… Seeing him back out playing and being in a situation now where he’s building back up to be in contention for selection for the Test team again is very, very exciting.”
