Motera goes yellow in anticipation of Dhoni's last dance

It was the perfect result for the Ahmedabad crowd: their defending champions getting off to a winning start, even while they had their fill of the MS Dhoni show

Shashank Kishore31-Mar-2023On IPL opening night, a 100,000-strong Ahmedabad crowd enjoyed the best of both worlds. It couldn’t have been more perfect for them than an MS Dhoni special and Gujarat Titans win.Except, Motera’s definition of “special” was something as simple as Dhoni tying his shoelaces, Dhoni waving while being paraded around the ground on a golf cart decked up like a chariot, or, even better, Dhoni emerging from the dressing room in his match gear. Who could fault them for going into a tizzy, though, with it being just shy of eight years since he last played at the ground. In fact, it was closing in on a year since he was last spotted on a cricket field of note anywhere, and that last sighting was at the end of an atypically woeful run for Chennai Super Kings at IPL 2022. Yes, everyone was waiting to see Dhoni, at 41, hoping for one more glimpse of the man if not the legend. They had braved traffic snarls, the sapping humidity that typically follows a summer downpour, the long queues to pick up physical tickets, and impossible levels of frisking and poking and prodding to finally get to their seats. As if all of this wasn’t stressful enough, they had to sit through the opening ceremony with the anxiety of whether Dhoni would actually play.On match eve, Dhoni had trained with knee braces. The news spread like wildfire on social media, with reports emerging that he’d probably have to skip the game. So every move Dhoni made today was viewed through the prism of him being a doubtful starter. It was a full house at Motera to kick off IPL 2023•AFP/Getty ImagesWhen he stretched his right leg, they wondered if he’d cramped. When he crouched low and did his wicketkeeping drills, they wondered if he was testing his hamstrings. When he gently lobbed a few overarm deliveries during the warm-ups, they wondered if the casual vibe was a sign of him not playing. Then, during the match, in the dying moments, when he clutched his toes to stretch after diving but failing to stop four leg byes, there was a collective cry of anguish, the four leg byes that benefitted Titans be damned. It needed a breathtaking opening ceremony to briefly keep the Dhoni chorus away. It felt like a home game for Chennai Super Kings, but when has it not been so at a Super Kings game, particularly since Dhoni’s message on Instagram at 19:29 on India’s Independence Day in 2020 to “consider me retired” from international cricket. Covid-19 pushed the IPL that year to September and CSK went on to have a season to forget, finishing joint-last on the points table. He couldn’t sign off altogether from cricket on that note, surely? In 2021, Dhoni duly lifted the IPL trophy. Dad’s Army had done it. There couldn’t have been a sweeter way to bid goodbye, right? But the win hadn’t come in Chennai, with the IPL once again moved to the UAE due to Covid-19. How could he have left without saying goodbye to his beloved Chepauk faithful? And so he came back in 2022, only for the tournament to be played only in Mumbai and Pune as cricket, like everything else, slowly got back on its feet after the ravages of the pandemic.Hardik Pandya could not have been faulted if he was left wondering about the concept of home advantage•Associated PressIn a rare expression of emotion after the season, Dhoni said he’d like to say goodbye in front of his home fans. When? No one knew. And so, here we were, in 2023, beginning all over again. Wondering if this would be his last dance. It’s a thought that consumed many in the crowd as they watched the opening ceremony. There was a point when the cameras panned to the Super Kings dugout with Dhoni the only one seated there, his feet tapping to Arijit Singh’s chartbusters. From singing along to “Channa Mereya” the crowd switched to “Dhooo-ni! Dhooo-ni!”. It was a proper throwback for those who grew up in the ’90s and 2000s, to hearing chants of “Saaa-chin! Saaa-chin!”.At several points during Super Kings’ innings, the crowd yelled for Dhoni to come out. For close to 90 minutes, they keep trying. At one point when Shivam Dube kept swinging for the hills and missing, they lost patience. The home team was in the ascendancy despite an astounding Ruturaj Gaikwad innings. You’d think the home fans would have rejoiced. They didn’t. They kept waiting for Dhoni. And after 90 minutes, when he finally took strike, the noise was deafening. But the loudest cheer on the night was yet to come. It was reserved for when he clattered his fourth ball for a six off Josh Little. Hardik Pandya could have well been left wondering if this was what they meant by home advantage. The Dhoni mania briefly gave way to rich applause when Shubman Gill played a series of aesthetically pleasing shots to get Titans’ chase going. But every now and then, there was a reminder that the fans were mostly here for Dhoni.A touch of Titans, a dash of Dhoni – the recipe in Ahmedabad on Friday evening•AFP via Getty ImagesThe 179 Super Kings had set wasn’t quite in the Dhoni territory of choke by spin, definitely not on this deck where the ball skidded through and came on nicely. But in empowering two rookies in Tushar Deshpande and Rajvardhan Hangargekar with the new ball, Dhoni played his cards like he always has amid the clamour. He was calm even when Deshpande went for a succession of boundaries and when he and Hangargekar overstepped. He was waiting for that one opening, and when he finally had it, he brought Ravindra Jadeja on and promptly attacked, with a slip in place for Hardik. Perhaps the presence of that fielder prompted Hardik’s dismissal, bowled missing a sweep. The match nearly went into Dhoni’s grasp after Hangargekar struck in the 18th over, but in the end it became amply evident that Super Kings’ middle-order slip-up, after Gaikwad’s stunner, was going to cost them. Dhoni alluded to this, his parting line at the presentation being: “I’m not disappointed, our bowlers tried their best.” It was a typical, succinct Dhoni assessment of where they’d erred. As for the crowd, they left a happy lot, perhaps wishing they could see a repeat of this clash come May 28, and return in big numbers to cheer for the man in the yellow No. 7 jersey while having their own team defend their crown.

A field of dreams for Sohaib Maqsood

An international recall and tournament-winning innings on the same day continued a remarkable resurgence

Danyal Rasool25-Jun-2021A security guard saluted before the rusty metal gate creaked open, and the traffic barrier moved aside to let the SUV pass. We were ushered through several acres of private farmland and then it came into view: a field with the grass cut very short. Clearly, this patch of land wasn’t meant to grow any kind of crop.It was a full-sized cricket ground, and the host was an influential local businessman in Multan clearly eager to show off his pride and joy. A 40-over game was underway, a number of the cricketers were seasoned veterans of the Pakistan domestic scene in search of a game while the 2020 edition of the Pakistan Super League was underway. This was weeks before the Covid-19 pandemic brought world sport – and much else – to a standstill, and while we idly lazed about the ground watching the game, the businessman said something that stood out. “Sohaib Maqsood plays here from time to time,” he beamed proudly. You couldn’t help wonder what Maqsood might have made of his career as he enjoyed a casual hit at this ground. Unlike the players we were watching, Maqsood was a Pakistan international who had played 46 white-ball internationals for Pakistan, someone whose exploits had been witnessed by crowds at the Wanderers and the Gabba, Eden Park and Sharjah. It was difficult not to feel that while Maqsood’s presence here might be a feather in the businessman’s cap, the reverse was very much not true. Maqsood playing here – it just didn’t fit. It’s everything he’s done in the time since that explains why it sounded out of place. On a whirlwind day that saw him called up to the national side in fortuitous circumstances for the first time in five years, Maqsood smashed 65 off 35 balls in the PSL final, leading his native Multan Sultans to their first title.Related

He came out to bat around the halfway mark, but it was his presence in the dugout that allowed Shan Masood and Mohammad Rizwan to spend the first eight overs anchoring their way through an innings that really should have taken off by then. Rizwan was struggling for rhythm while Masood managed just four runs off his first eleven deliveries, and by the numbers, Peshawar Zalmi were well on top at that stage, having stifled the openers during the Powerplay. But there’s a reason Sultans’ openers bat the way they do, why they have more 50-plus partnerships than any other franchise all season. They can afford to be cautious in the Powerplay because when they look across to the dug-out Maqsood is padded up, raring to go in the form of his life. Only two batters have more runs in the tournament, with no one in the top seven matching his strike rate.

For a player who, on his day looks like everything comes easy to him, Maqsood knows of the grind that follows when runs dry up, the phone stops ringing and relationships sour

Few of his team-mates need to take risks because Maqsood will take more than his fair share, all without looking like he is. And when he came in to replace Masood in the ninth over, he delivered what he had promised he would: a big fat strike rate.Maqsood and Rilee Rossouw combined for a 98-run partnership that came in 44 balls, pushing what appeared to be a 170-run target to one in excess of 200. Maqsood set things going by clobbering 17 off Wahab Riaz in a glorious innings that showcased the full range of his shotmaking ability. There was the mid-off punch off the Zalmi captain that got things going, and the hoick over midwicket which tends to travel the furthest distance. There were wristy drives, and paddles past fine leg. And the magnum opus, the inside out drive over extra cover for six he appears to execute with perfection against pace and spin with equal effortlessness. This was the player that drew breathless comparisons to Inzamam-ul-Haq when he first put on Pakistan colours in 2013. He excited Pakistan supporters because he seemed to be everything they lacked in T20 cricket, a power hitter who doubled as a quality batter. Now he finds himself on a plane to England and the West Indies for two T20I series ahead of the T20 World Cup as Pakistan continue to search for a big hitter up top. The changes in Pakistan cricket can be hard to keep track of, but some things really do always stay the same.

Not for Maqsood they don’t, though. This was a player who was unofficially written off by Pakistan, consigned to the burgeoning scrapheap of talent cast aside for a great diversity of reasons. There were rumours about discontent with his attitude, while several coaches and selectors were understood to be less than impressed by the care he was taking of his body. “Fitness issues” became the catch-all explanation for his exclusion, with Pakistan appearing resigned to having lost him for good. But in the past year, from being hidden away in private grounds behind barricaded metal gates, Maqsood was surfacing once more. Picked for the Southern Punjab side in the National T20 Cup, he had a blast, finishing third in the runs charts, his strike-rate of 167.94 superior to anyone in the top five. It included a barmy chase that saw Maqsood at his magnificent best as he smashed a 29-ball 81 as his side ran down a chase of 166 in 10.4 overs to qualify for the final. The PSL draft was weeks away, and, as it was on the pitch, Maqsood’s timing couldn’t be better.”I took a break from red-ball cricket and worked on my skills,” Maqsood said after being named the Player of the Match in the final. “Form plays a big role, though, because when you’re in form, your mind works better and you make more assured decisions. I don’t want to do anything different in England and West Indies, and just keep repeating what has made me successful here. I want to take responsibility and hopefully the results will follow.”Maqsood has never been to England with the Pakistan side, but that’s not just why the tour that follows feels somewhat like the start of a new career for the 34-year old. 2016, the last time he played international cricket, feels a world away, especially so in Pakistan cricket. For a player who, on his day looks like everything comes easy to him, Maqsood knows of the grind that follows when runs dry up, the phone stops ringing and relationships sour.Much more significantly, he understands what it takes to scrap his way back, spending time in gyms and obscure cricket grounds no one gets to see. All for nights like these, when you can hardly look anywhere else. How’s that for attitude?

Rangers dud is rivalling Chermiti for being one of Thelwell's worst signings

Glasgow Rangers made two huge decisions on Monday as they announced that both CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell had been removed from their posts at Ibrox.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh revealed to Sky Sports, in the post below, that the Gers need different people in those two leadership positions moving forward in order for the club to be successful.

The Rangers chief was careful not to throw mud at Stewart and Thelwell for their work at Ibrox, but suggested that it was down to their performance in their respective roles, as he stated that they still aligned with the overarching project.

Given that Russell Martin’s tenure lasted 17 matches and several summer signings do not look up to scratch, it is hard to disagree with the club’s decision to part ways with both of them, particularly Thelwell.

Looking at the list of summer signings in the graphic above, it is easier to pick out the players who have flopped or struggled than it is to pick out the successes from the summer transfer window.

The summer signing that Thelwell may go on to be infamous at Ibrox for is Youssef Chermiti, as he arrived from his former club Everton in a big-money deal.

Why Rangers should not have signed Youssef Chermiti

To preface this, supporters and those at the club will, of course, be hoping that the Portugal U21 international goes on to prove everyone wrong and becomes a consistent goalscorer for the Light Blues.

However, at this moment in time, it looks like a deal that the Scottish giants should not have done, particularly for the reported money that was involved in the move.

Thelwell signed Chermiti for Everton from Sporting in a deal worth up to £15m in the summer of 2023, but he did not score a single competitive goal for the Toffees in two years during his time in England.

Then, after moving to Rangers in April, the sporting director signed the centre-forward for a second time, splashing £8m to bring him to Ibrox, in the most expensive Gers deal since Tore Andre Flo joined for £12m in 2000.

It is fair for supporters to expect a player to make an immediate impact in Glasgow when signed for that kind of money, as Chermiti is the club’s most expensive player in 25 years, but that has not been the case.

The former Everton marksman has scored one goal in 13 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues, per Sofascore, which shows that the forward has failed to deliver much in the way of quality in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, Chermiti has been incredibly underwhelming in the Europa League so far this season, failing to score from 1.29 xG after starting all four of his appearances in the competition.

The 21-year-old striker’s dismal form for the club so far suggests that Thelwell made a mistake when he signed the forward for £8m, because he has not made the kind of impact that Rangers should expect from such an expensive signing.

Chermiti, though, is not the only one of the summer signings you could argue that Thelwell should not have signed because of their performances in the 2025/26 campaign.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The former Rangers sporting director swooped to bring in Jayden Meghoma on loan from Brentford to bolster Russell Martin’s full-back options, as the ex-Gers boss had worked with the youngster during their time together at Southampton.

Why Rangers should not have signed Jayden Meghoma

During the summer window, Thelwell decided to cash in on the two senior left-back options at Ibrox, selling Jefte to Palmeiras and Ridvan Yilmaz to Besiktas.

Whilst those respective sales were not horrendous decisions in isolation, this issue is that Meghoma was the only signing brought in to replace those two senior players.

4 Lads Had A Dream covered Ally McCoist’s claim that Rangers have “downgraded” across the pitch since last season, and referenced Meghoma in comparison to Jefte as one of the areas in which the team have failed to improve.

It is not the 19-year-old defender’s fault that he has been brought in to be a first-choice option for a team that is expected to win consistently and compete on the European stage, when his experience last season was playing 12 matches on loan at Preston in the English Championship.

Meghoma, unfortunately, does not look ready to be a first-choice left-back at this level at the moment, as evidenced by his statistics in comparison to Jefte’s at Scottish Premiership level.

As you can see in the table above, the Brazilian defender’s performances in the league last season were far more impressive than what the English teenager has produced in the division this term, offensively and defensively.

These statistics back up the claim that Rangers have “downgraded” by selling Jefte to sign Meghoma on loan, which adds more fuel to the fire surrounding the criticism of Thelwell’s summer recruitment.

Like Chermiti, it seems like Meghoma has been signed to fill a role that he is not ready to fill at this point in his development. They are both young players who have time to develop and improve, but neither of them look ready to be key players for Danny Rohl in the present.

Therefore, the signing of Meghoma was one of Thelwell’s worst clangers of the summer, alongside Chermiti, because he has failed to adequately replace Jefte at left-back, and it remains to be seen if either of them will end up being good enough this season.

Thelwell signing is a bigger waste of time than Chermiti & Miovski at Rangers

This Glasgow Rangers flop is a bigger waste of time this season than both Bojan Miovski and Youssef Chermiti.

Phillies Prospect Sets Painful Hit by Pitch Record

In a painful—and record—day at the office, Philadelphia Phillies prospect Otto Kemp was hit by a pitch four times in the Lehigh Valley IronPigs' 7-3 win over the Columbus Clippers on Tuesday. On a night where fans at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pa., were treated to seeing Phillies lefthander Ranger Suarez pitch in a rehab assignment, Kemp stole the show—but not in the way he would have hoped.

In his first trip to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, Kemp was plunked in his left thigh by a 91-MPH fastball. In the second inning, Kemp again took a fastball to the body, this time to his left hand.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, the IronPigs third baseman mercifully broke up the painful pattern that was beginning to develop, as he laced a double to center field and later scored in the inning.

And with pitcher Parker Messick, who had plunked Kemp twice, out of the game, surely his troubles were over, right? Unfortunately, no. Facing Clippers righthander Mason Hickman in the bottom of the sixth, Kemp took one for the team off of his derriere. Moments later, he got some measure of revenge, swiping second base against Hickman.

Finally, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the 25-year-old was hit by an 82-MPH slider on his left ankle—by a third pitcher no less. Kemp's final line on the day—1-for-1 with a double and four HBPs, which is an IronPigs record.

While it's not exactly clear what the minor league record for HBPs in one game is, the big league record is three. Should Kemp one day make it to the majors, he could threaten that record, given his propensity to stand close to the plate in the batter's box.

In 270 career minor league games, Kemp has been plunked 54 times.

Lionel Messi scores and assists as Argentina defeat Angola in a pre-World Cup friendly.

Lionel Messi bagged a goal and an assist as Argentina earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory away to Angola. The 2022 World Cup winner is coming towards the end of his illustrious career but the veteran's quality was plain to see as he played an instrumental role in this friendly win on Friday. Both he and Lautaro Martinez scored and turned provider as the Albiceleste marched on once more.

Argentina spoil Angola's celebrations

Angola, who were celebrating the 50th anniversary of their independence from Portugal, started brightly, and had it not been for a good stop from goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, the 50,000-strong crowd may have been heard to Argentina and back.

The hosts were indebted to their own keeper not long after when Hugo Martinez denied Messi with a smart stop. But the Angola number one did not cover himself in glory in the 44th minute when Martinez fired Messi's neat through ball between the stopper's legs from a tight angle.

Inter Miami star Messi went close shortly after the break but the home team were putting up a good fight at The Estádio 11 de Novembro. But the Barcelona legend would not be denied and after Martinez picked up the loose ball, he set up Messi, who buried his shot from 10 yards in the 82nd minute. That ended another year for Argentina, with Lionel Scaloni's side second in the world rankings and already thinking of further glory next summer in north America.

AdvertisementAFPThe MVP

Both Martinez and Messi were, arguably, the standout performers for Argentina as they overcame a stubborn Angola side in their backyard. The duo came away with a goal and an assist but the 38-year-old was, perhaps, the bigger threat throughout the match. On another day, he could have had a hat-trick.

The big loser

While Angola gave a good account of themselves, their defending for the goals was a little suspect. For the first, they allowed Martinez to get behind their backline, when they had a good chance to step up, rendering him offside. And for the second, they were all at sea as Martinez found Messi with ease. But Marques was beaten a bit too easily for Argentina's opener, as the ball went through his legs. While this may have been planned, the keeper was hooked at half time and replaced by Neblu.

Aaron: Need a ‘maverick’ like Pant to disrupt opposition plans

In Sydney during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Rishabh Pant shocked everyone on the final day when he walked out at the fall of India captain Ajinkya Rahane’s wicket in the second over of the day. Pant brought a sensational approach to saving the Test, scoring 73 in the first session. He was 97 off 117 when Nathan Lyon started the 80th over. Cheteshwar Pujara, Pant’s partner at the time, reminded him to just be watchful because the second new ball was going to be crucial.Pant went down the track first ball of the 80th over and was dismissed off a thick outside edge. He was devastated. It seemed as if a crane would be required to take him off the field. He was also angry at Pujara for casting a seed of doubt in his head, which he felt contributed to the miscue.Related

Two days before the third Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Lord’s, India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak spoke about this side of Pant while talking about how much of a thinker of batting he is. Kotak was asked how important it was for batting partners to not talk to Pant. “Rishabh actually talks a lot about what he does, when he does [it], why he does [it],” Kotak said. “To me, he’s spoken, but he’s someone who doesn’t like talking too much during his innings because he feels that that changes his mindset, and he takes the wrong decision. That’s only when he’s batting.”Apart from that, he talks about other batters also, about himself also, and he does [properly plan] what he wants to do because it’s not so easy to score Test hundreds or not so easy to be successful at this level without having any planning.”No advice might be the best advice if you’re batting with Rishabh Pant•Getty ImagesThe moves Pant makes might look random, but Kotak suggested there is thought and planning behind each of them. Kotak was happy to have a maverick such as Pant in the line-up but generally insisted on the batters not being too eager to score runs, which might have become a habit after playing – as India have done – on extremely bowling-friendly pitches in the last few years.”If a batter thinks there is a lot of movement in the pitch, and if there is [half] an opportunity I have to score boundaries because there is a good ball coming [anyway], that is a bad mindset for red-ball cricket,” Kotak said. “Anyway, they possess so much skill because of white-ball cricket that they can convert anything in the slot into fours and sixes. They don’t have to really think that I want to hit a boundary.”Kotak insisted that this was not an instruction imparted after the first-Test defeat at Headingley but his general philosophy before the start of the series. “We have batted well in both the matches,” Kotak said. “I feel we have such skilful batters [who] can score at four an over without going searching for runs. What else is aggressive batting? We are scoring 360 in 90 overs. But our mindset now is to not go looking for boundaries.”That is not necessarily good news for England because they relied on getting batters caught on the boundary to make their way back into the match during both of India’s innings at Headingley. In the second Test at Edgbaston, captain Shubman Gill led by example and refused to be content with a big score and play a casual shot. He aggregated 430 runs in the match to bat England out of the game.

Crystal Palace now eyeing move to sign "incredible" Marc Guehi replacement

Crystal Palace are now considering a move for an “incredible” defender as a replacement for Marc Guehi, with the England international expected to leave on a free transfer.

Palace looking to sign Guehi replacement

Guehi came very close to signing for Liverpool at the end of the summer transfer window, but the move fell through at the last minute, with talkSPORT’s Alex Crook revealing that Oliver Glasner played a major role in preventing the deal going ahead.

Despite the centre-back’s move to the reigning Premier League champions breaking down, he hasn’t kicked up a fuss, which led to high praise from England manager Thomas Tuchel, who said: “He looks absolutely fine and impressive on the field. He has had a good couple of weeks behind him on the performance side.

“He has continued like that in camp and he handles it [the transfer situation] with respect and with a brilliant attitude.”

More recently, the 25-year-old once again underlined his importance to the Three Lions by putting in a very impressive performance against Wales, keeping a clean sheet and assisting his side’s opening two goals, which helped secure a 8.2 SofaScore match rating.

The Palace captain, who is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, continues to attract interest ahead of next summer, with Real Madrid recently being named as potential suitors.

According to a report from We Are Palace, Guehi is expected to leave on a free next summer, with Crystal Palace not even attempting to convince him to stay anymore, and a Ligue 1 defender has been identified as a potential replacement.

Indeed, Toulouse’s Charlie Cresswell is now being considered as an option, having impressed Palace scouts with his performances in Ligue 1 last season, making 31 appearances as his side went on to secure a 10th-placed finish.

Cresswell is accustomed to playing in a three-at-the-back formation, which means he could be an ideal fit in Glasner’s system, and he is thought to have significant potential.

"Incredible" Cresswell could be solid Guehi replacement

At just 23-years-old, the Toulouse defender is at a good age to be a long-term replacement for Guehi, and he evidently has the talent to be a success at Selhurst Park, having put in some very impressive performances for Toulouse over the past year.

Once lauded as “incredible” by football scout Jacek Kulig, the Englishman was also a key player for the Three Lions as they went on to win the Under 21 European Championships in the summer, starting all six games.

Cresswell could be a fantastic signing for Palace, with it looking almost certain that Guehi will leave on a free transfer, but he is not the only exciting option on the shortlist, with West Ham United’s Max Kilman also recently being identified as a target.

Rangers must regret losing the Harry Kane of Scottish football for nothing

Glasgow Rangers have struggled to score goals in the Scottish Premiership under Russell Martin so far this season, with three goals scored in five matches.

Only Aberdeen, who have failed to score any goals in their four outings in the division, have scored fewer goals than the Light Blues, which speaks to how impotent they have been in the final third in the opening weeks of the campaign.

It is not good enough, hence why the Gers have not picked up a single win yet, and Martin must find a way to get his strikers firing in front of goal if he wants to turn his fortunes around at Ibrox.

How the strikers have performed for Rangers this season

None of the club’s centre-forward options have got off the mark in the Premiership so far this season for the Light Blues, which is a cause for concern.

As you can see in the table above, only Bojan Miovski and Danilo have accrued any xG, as Dessers did not before his exit, and Chermiti has only had a cameo against Hearts so far.

This suggests that Rangers need to create more for their strikers, or that the strikers need to start making better runs, because they do not have a reliable goalscorer at the moment.

Given their lack of potency up front, Rangers may still regret the fact that Michael Beale and the club allowed Alfredo Morelos to move on from Ibrox on a free transfer.

Rangers fumbled their own Harry Kane

Back in 2019, former Light Blues striker Jermaine Defoe compared the Colombia international to his former teammate Harry Kane, who went on to become Tottenham Hotspur and England’s all-time top scorer, with 280 goals for Spurs and 74 for England, per Transfermarkt.

Defoe told the Daily Record: “I remember at Tottenham, when we had Harry Kane as a youngster, he went out on loan to different clubs. I remember saying to one of the players that I believed he should play more and that, at some point, he would go on to score a lot of goals for this football club.

“What he has done is unbelievable and Alfredo’s got that. He’s a goalscorer. When you’re a goalscorer, you score goals at any level in any league.”

Morelos certainly was a goalscorer. The prolific forward scored 30 goals in 48 matches in the 2018/19 campaign, per Transfermarkt, which led to that comparison to Kane from Defoe, and rightly so after that incredible return.

He went on to score 124 goals and provide 67 assists in 269 appearances in all competitions for Rangers, per Transfermarkt. This shows that he was consistently reliable in front of goal for the Scottish giants.

Morelos, whose physicality was hailed by former boss Steven Gerrard, recorded 12 goals and seven assists in all competitions during the 2022/23 campaign, which turned out to be his final season at the club.

The Colombian number nine’s contract at Ibrox expired in the summer 2023 and Beale, who was the manager at the time, did not offer him a new contract at the club.

Beale decided to go in a different direction with the striker department at the club, signing Sam Lammers, Danilo, and Dessers after releasing Morelos, who was the club’s own version of Kane.

Two years on, Lammers and Dessers have been sold by Rangers and Danilo currently finds himself behind Miovski and Chermiti in the pecking order to be the first-choice number nine at Ibrox.

This suggests that Beale had a howler by deciding not to attempt to convince Morelos to stay at Ibrox because he was a proven goalscorer who had shown that he could score goals at an impressive rate for the Gers in Scotland.

Instead, the manager released a pure goalscorer, who was like Kane, and went with a clutch of strikers who failed to bring success, with no league titles won, back to Ibrox in the last two years.
