Patel knock sees Notts cruise home

Nottinghamshire pounced on the final day of a sun-drenched match to seal a seven-wicket win and edge Warwickshire off the top of Division One.With the holiday feel of the south coast giving way to weekday mode, the visitors were businesslike, taking six wickets in the morning session to dismiss Sussex for 263 and marching to the victory target in 44.3 overs. The best sides separate themselves from decent ones by grasping key moments and that’s precisely what the visitors did to deliver their first win at Hove since 1983. It took them a point clear at the top of the table, though Warwickshire have a game in hand, and coach Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, was suitably impressed.”We haven’t won here for 30 years,” he said. “I think that shows how hard we find it coming to grounds where pitches are very different to the kind of pitches we would prepare. I think it’s a great win, and having lost the toss I think it’s an even better win.”Set a target of 145 in two sessions Nottinghamshire leapt out the blocks and were guided home by an unbeaten fifty from Samit Patel. The pitch was worn enough for the first ball of the run chase, from James Anyon, to catapult off a length and almost take Riki Wessel’s throat off. Thereafter Anyon was loose and the Notts openers profited. The fifty was up in the 10th over and with that the game was as good as won.Michael Yardy rotated his bowlers desperately, making 10 bowling changes in less than two sessions of play but without meaningful consequence. All the while Monty Panesar was struggling to make an impact. He was switched from end to end but couldn’t make a decisive contribution. Despite a probing final spell from the Sea End, where he dismissed Michael Lumb and severely troubled James Taylor, Panesar managed just two wickets from 52 overs in the game. It doesn’t compare well with the other spinners – Chris Nash, Patel and Yardy – who took 12 between them.Sussex, though, were chasing the game after squandering good batting conditions on day one. “We fell short on first innings badly,” Sussex coach Mark Robinson said. “We were in a position to get 400 in the first innings and didn’t. From there you lose the ascendancy and we paid the penalty. Some of our shot selection and execution was probably our downfall in both innings. We’ve got a little bit of naivety and inexperience in our team and with a young team you’re going to get those kind of mistakes.”The morning of the first day had followed a late finish to Sussex’s CB40 game the night before and though Robinson was reluctant to make it an excuse he did admit that it hampered preparation. “The average player went to bed at 1.30am and that can’t be right, while the other team were in bed. It’s tough. We’re paid to adapt, professional sportsman have to cope, but it was not ideal.”Coming into the final day Sussex had pinned their hopes on the experienced pairing of Murray Goodwin and Luke Wright, who’d added an accomplished 77 the previous evening. For almost 10 overs they advanced untroubled. But the introduction of Andre Adams quickly changed things. He beat Goodwin with his fifth delivery and struck in his second over. Wright had past fifty, to go with his first-innings hundred, and looked well set for more but on 55 fenced outside off and Chris Read flew to his right to clasp the edge. From that chink, Nottinghamshire burst through. Patel had Ben Brown caught behind for the second time in the match and Goodwin clipped Adams to midwicket to fall for 77. He will be delighted to have found form but disgusted to get out so softly. Sussex suddenly found themselves just 104 in front with their recognised batsmen dismissed. Though the tail fought to drag the lead up another 40 it was never enough.

Mitchell Starc collected 2 for 52•Getty ImagesThe first day of Australia’s home Test summer ended in gloom, only 51 overs bowled as bad light and rain closed in on the Gabba late in the second session. But for Australia’s fans, the darkness overhead was of less consequence than the several bright spots they saw on the field, on a day when three debutants helped give Australia the edge over New Zealand.Mitchell Starc swung the ball impressively and collected two wickets, James Pattinson also curved the ball in the air and picked up one, and David Warner snaffled a pair of catches to ensure all three men will remember their first day of Test cricket with fondness. By the close of play, New Zealand had steadied through Daniel Vettori and Dean Brownlie, whose stand had reached 80, but plenty more work was required. When the players left the field shortly before the scheduled tea break – they didn’t get back on – New Zealand were 5 for 176, with Vettori on 45 and Brownlie on 32. Viewed as the result of a day when Ross Taylor had won the toss and chosen to bat, it was a disappointing outcome for New Zealand; but seen in the context of their early collapse, it was a solid fightback. In the first over after lunch, the visitors stumbled to 5 for 96 when Jesse Ryder was caught at point by Warner when he failed to find the gap off Starc. The sixth wicket could easily have fallen soon afterwards as Brownlie was dropped twice on 3, first when Michael Clarke grassed a sitter at first slip off Peter Siddle, and then when Warner couldn’t cling on to a tough chance at point off Starc.Playing against the country where he was born and raised, Brownlie had some nervous moments, leading edges landing safe and unconvincing shots played. But he hung in and slowly warmed into his routine, and by the end of the day he had played a couple of strong shots, including a powerful cut behind point for four off Starc.Vettori played his natural game, compiling the runs at a reasonable pace without taking many risks, and the Australians needed a breakthrough to ensure their promising morning wasn’t wasted. The attack was as green as the baggy caps that were liberally dispensed on the first morning at the Gabba but by lunch they had put their team firmly on top.Starc picked up the key wicket of Brendon McCullum and his fellow first-gamer James Pattinson removed the New Zealand captain Taylor to leave the visitors on 4 for 94 at lunch. It was a disappointing effort from New Zealand after they had chosen to bat on a cloudy Brisbane morning, all the more so because the openers McCullum and Martin Guptill had taken the score to 44 without loss. But Siddle broke the opening stand and the offspinner Nathan Lyon, who had never bowled at the Gabba, also struck when given an early opportunity by Clarke. While the New Zealand batsmen had contributed to their own demises on a pitch a little on the slow side, conditions were not easy as there was some swing in the first session, exploited especially well by Starc.Auditioning for a long-term role in the team in the absence of his fellow left-armer Mitchell Johnson, Starc showed an ability to consistently swing the ball in to the right-handers and it was that talent that troubled McCullum. Earlier McCullum had pounced on width outside off, striking three boundaries in the first over of the match as Pattinson struggled to find his line. But against Starc, McCullum had no room and twice was cramped up awkwardly, including once when a bouncer straightened and struck him on the helmet. Starc moved around the wicket to McCullum and had him caught for 34 when his cut was snapped up at point by Warner.Already Siddle had made a breakthrough when Guptill drove at a ball that moved away just a fraction and was caught behind for 13, and two wickets was a good start for Australia. There was more to come, though, with Kane Williamson struggling to move his feet against the offspin of Lyon, who was supported by the captain Clarke with a leg-slip who nearly came into play when Williamson tickled a ball fine.Soon enough Williamson’s hesitance against the spin brought his downfall, his lunge forward resulting in an inside edge on to his leg that was snapped up at short leg for 19. Three wickets would have been a fine session for Australia but it became an even better one when Taylor handed Pattinson his maiden Test wicket.Pattinson had been nervous early but on his return swung the ball impressively. However, it was a full and wide ball that accounted for Taylor (14), who tried for a powerful square drive only to see the ball rocket off his inside edge and back onto his stumps, a disappointing way for the captain to depart having chosen to bat in challenging conditions.By the end of the truncated day, the team had recovered somewhat. But as has too often been the case in recent years, much responsibility would rest on Vettori, who must again fight off Australia’s enthusiastic attack on the second day.

Lancashire win vital court battle

Lancashire have won their Court of Appeal battle over the redevelopment of Old Trafford and can finally press ahead with the rebuilding work to secure their Test match future

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jul-2011Lancashire have won their Court of Appeal battle over the redevelopment of Old Trafford and can finally press ahead with the rebuilding work to secure their Test match future after what had been termed a ‘day of destiny’.The county have been involved in long-running legal battles with Derwent Holdings, a rival development company, over their plans for Old Trafford which involve working with the Tesco supermarket chain to build a superstore close to the ground.Derwent, who owned the White City retail park near Old Trafford, felt they had a suitable claim to build their own superstore but the case was repeatedly thrown out by various courts until it was taken to the Court of Appeal. The three judges hearing the case took evidence from both sides on Monday before quickly deciding in Lancashire’s favour, and Derwent haven’t been granted leave to appeal again.”This is one of the biggest days in the club’s history,” Lancashire chief Jim Cumbes said. “If we don’t redevelop then 150-odd years of history would have been in danger of disappearing.”With redevelopment, I am confident that Old Trafford can continue as an international cricket ground. Today’s decision means that the work can start and we can get the spades out.”The delays caused by the ongoing court cases meant that crucial funding couldn’t be released to pay for the development. However, the club had already started on significant building work in recent months because they couldn’t afford to wait any longer to hit deadlines set by the ECB if they were to be able to bid for a 2013 Ashes Test.Tesco are backing Lancashire’s plans and building a store in nearby White City while contributing £21million to the cost. Their joint planning application was approved in March last year, and at the same planning meeting Derwent had a scheme to build a Sainsbury’s at the site refused. Derwent argued that Trafford Council applied double standards in refusing its plans. The first part of the redevelopment was completed last year with the opening of The Point, a large red complex to the side of the pavilion, and continued over the winter with the turning of the square 90 degrees to prevent problems caused by the setting sun in autumn while new floodlights have also been installed.

Man City handed Frenkie de Jong boost

Manchester City will be set to say goodbye to Fernandinho this summer after he revealed this would be his last season with the club.

Having signed back in 2013, the Brazilian has gone on to make 382 appearances for the Citizens across all competitions.

In those appearances, the midfielder has scored 26 goals, provided 33 assists and won numerous trophies along the way.

As he was so keen to join the club all those years ago, it was revealed that the player paid £4m of his own transfer fee to make his move to the Etihad Stadium.

Looking ahead to the next summer window, it seems as though another midfield talent is willing to make a financial sacrifice to force his way to the Manchester club.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from The Sun, Barcelona midfielder, Frenkie de Jong, is reportedly willing to kiss goodbye to nearly £6m in unpaid wages to clinch a move to City this summer.

Having made 135 appearances for Ajax across their senior side and U21 team, the Dutchman joined Barcelona in the 2019 summer transfer window after striking a deal worth £65m for him back in January.

It’s thought the player may cost around £59.6m this summer.

Great news for Man City

Since arriving at Barca, the 25-year-old has played in 139 games for the La Liga side across all competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists along the way.

To highlight what a useful midfield option he could be for Pep Guardiola, de Jong is listed in the top five at Barcelona for passes made while under pressure from an opponent and key passes. He is also among the best five for shot and goal-creating actions in La Liga this term.

This shows just how much of a talented figure he is on the ball and how he can create goalscoring opportunities for his teammates. It also shows why Barca boss Xavi previously described him as a “genius.”

With City averaging more possession and passing success in the Premier League this season than any other side, adding the Barcelona star to their ranks could be a match made in heaven for both parties.

Now that the £63m-rated midfielder’s willingness to forget about his unpaid wages from Barcelona to join City has been reported, this surely represents good news for the Manchester club.

It should consequently push them into making a move to sign him as soon as possible.

O Palmeiras conhece o caminho e inegavelmente tentou segui-lo nesta terça.
