Ex-Rangers ace drops big claim on Kamara future - exclusive

Michael Ball admits that Rangers may find it difficult to keep midfielder Glen Kamara at the club this summer.

The Finland international has been heavily linked with a move away from Ibrox prior to the transfer deadline.

Per 90min, Kamara is said to be of interest to a clutch of Premier League clubs, while Rangers are keen to tie him down to a new contract.

The report claims that Arsenal, from whose academy he graduated, Newcastle United, and West Ham United are all interested in a potential swoop to sign the 25-year-old.

A versatile presence who can play in both defensive midfield and central midfield, Kamara has been with Rangers since 2019 and has made a total of 108 appearances for the club.

Steven Gerrard’s side may find it difficult to retain his services, though, given that the club were eliminated from the Champions League last week.

Ball believes that Gerrard would much rather keep Kamara at the club but accepts that they may find that difficult.

Speaking to Football FanCast, he said: “It’s always going to be difficult for Rangers to keep a player like him. I think he’s got a bit of a knock right now but if West Ham and Arsenal come calling, it’s going to be a difficult one for the club to try and keep him.

“Steven would want to keep him.”

Palace leading Leeds in Gallagher race

Alan Nixon has provided an update on Leeds’ chances of signing Conor Gallagher from Chelsea…

What’s the talk?

The Sun journalist Alan Nixon has suggested that Crystal Palace are ahead of Leeds in the race to land Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer. In response to a question asking whether he thinks Gallagher will end up at Selhurst Park or Leeds he posted “Palace.”

This comes after the Daily Mail reported that Leeds, Palace and Newcastle are all interested in signing the Englishman, who spent last season on loan to West Brom.

Fans will be fuming

Leeds fans will be fuming if Palace are able to oust the club in the race to land Gallagher in the coming weeks. It would be disappointing for supporters to see one of their rivals beat them to a signing, especially given that the Whites amassed 15 more points in the league last season.

From a playing point of view, a move to Yorkshire appears better for the youngster. Bielsa’s side finished well above Palace in the table and their style of play has been praised, including by Premier League icon Thierry Henry, as exciting in the way they attack teams and press high.

Earlier in his career, Gallagher was praised by Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews, who said that he has a “superb engine” and compared him to Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

He said: “But the one thing he has got is a fantastic engine, much like Lee Bowyer or Frank Lampard – it’s amazing, the resemblances between those two in their younger years particularly. But for me, he’s a classic No 8; he has an unbelievable energy, he does the ugly side of the game, but you have to let him off the leash and let him get forward.”

This suggests that he could suit Bielsa’s style as he has the legs to get up and down the pitch, pressing opponents and getting stuck in with challenges. Therefore, he could be a terrific addition to the squad on loan and add another great option for the Argentine coach in the middle of the park.

Palace, however, are closer to home for him given that they are also in London, which could be a factor that plays into their hands. It may be a decision made with a mix of logistics and footballing factors in play, but either way, Leeds fans will be frustrated if they miss out on a potentially good signing for the team to one of their Premier League rivals.

Top district match at weekend timely for CD selectors

A district cricket match between Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu scheduled for this weekend has proven quite timely for the Central Districts’ selectors. The two teams contain a significant proportion of the members of the CD squad and the traditionally hard-fought match will be a welcome chance to assess the form of players, only a week out from the opening of the State Championship.CD play the first match of the competition against Otago at Wanganui, starting on November 23.New CD coach Mark Greatbatch said it had not been ideal not being able to work with the players for six weeks while they were on strike. The players still in New Zealand had been getting together every fortnight since mid-winter which was something that hadn’t been done before and it had been working well. However, he was confident that getting the players back together and playing cricket, and making them the better players they want to be, would see them pick up where they left off very quickly. There was some competition for places in the side, and Greatbatch was expecting the four members of the New Zealand Under-19 side from last summer, Jesse Ryder, Ross Taylor, Ian Sandbrook and Richard Sherlock to all push for places in the side. The side will have to do without bowler Andrew Schwass for the first match. Last year’s most successful bowler for CD, he took 45 wickets at 14.73, dislocated his thumb while batting in Nelson last week. He put it back in himself, continued batting, bowled and then the next day complained of soreness.A check with a specialist showed that he had ruptured a ligament and he has the thumb in a cast for two weeks.Craig Spearman lends a factor to the top of the order that was missing last summer for the side and after his experience in county cricket with Gloucestershire during the winter, he can be expected to be in good shape.”If he is playing well, and it is his day, other sides know what can happen,” Greatbatch said.”He’ll give us experience whoever he is opening with.”Mathew Sinclair had been working hard in Marlborough, where he is playing this year. That has given him a head start over other players because the competition starts a little earlier in the sunshine capital of New Zealand. He scored 90 runs in club cricket last Saturday and had a century the weekend before.”It looks like he is progressing well there,” Greatbatch said.Michael Mason, after a full off-season in which to put the injuries of his past behind him, is looking very fit and Greatbatch is expecting him to be a dangerous bowler this year.Jacob Oram, who is looking to clinch a place in the World Cup side, has already made an impression on Greatbatch with his bowling this year and he is expecting Oram to take his batting to another level this summer. One player who will be watched in Napier over the weekend will be Greg Loveridge who has started the season well with the bat but who hasn’t had a lot of opportunity to bowl yet.CD will name their team for the opening match on Monday.

Celtic: Fans react to Aaron Hickey bid

Celtic have reportedly made a €4m (£3.4m) bid for left-back Aaron Hickey, and a number of Hoops fans have duly been sharing their thoughts on the transfer news on social media.

According to Il Resto del Carlino, as relayed by Video Celts, the Hoops have offered Bologna €4m (£3.4m) for the defender. Hickey admitted himself recently that he is ‘fully aware’ of the interest in his services, and it seems as if Celtic have now firmed up their interest with a bid.

The 19-year-old, who can play anywhere across the backline, is valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt and still has three years remaining on his Bologna contract.

He made 11 Serie A appearances last season after joining from Hearts last September, but it seems that a quick return to Scotland could well be on the cards.

Celtic fans react

@aboutceltic shared Il Resto del Carlino’s claim regarding Celtic’s offer for Hickey on Twitter. Here is what these Hoops supporters had to say, with many excited at the news.

Different approaches for Ponting and Warne

MELBOURNE, Oct 29 AAP – Key Australian players Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting showed differing approaches today to the punishing schedule of international cricket which awaits them.

Roger Vaughan29-Oct-2002MELBOURNE, Oct 29 AAP – Key Australian players Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting showed differing approaches today to the punishing schedule of international cricket which awaits them. While Warne’s unprecedented fitness and his outstanding form meant there was no way he would miss the Pura Cup match against Tasmania from tomorrow, Ponting will rest.Warne was super-keen to play because his friend and team-mate Darren Berry will become Victoria’s most-capped player.New Tasmanian coach Brian McFadyen said he had been hopeful Ponting would play, but the Australian Cricket Board asked for the national one-day captain to have some time off.”It’s disappointing, we’d love for Ricky to play,” McFadyen said.”We’re hopeful he’ll be available when we play Queensland between the first and second Tests.”Ponting needed surgery in June to help fix a stress fracture in his left foot.Warne, on the other hand, has regenerated his career after losing weight through a dedicated fitness regime.Australia’s top cricketers will soon start seven months of Tests and one-dayers, including the Ashes series and the World Cup.Warne was man of the series in Sri Lanka and Sharjah against Pakistan, with 27 wickets in three Tests. When asked if he had second thoughts about playing in this match, Warne replied: “Obviously when it was 53 degrees in Sharjah.”For me, I know it’s important just to keep bowling.”I think it’s up to the individual – if they want to play that’s good, if they don’t then that’s cool as well.”I don’t think it should be held against anyone.”Warne would also be anticipating a spin-friendly wicket towards the end of this match. The MCG pitch is unusually dry for this time of year and it should be a good batting track early in the match.Another obvious change will be the arena, with some of the Ponsford Stand missing. This will be the first event at the ground since redevelopment work started late last month.”You can actually see the Melbourne skyline, it’s a good little feel, a few of the boys said there should be a hill there,” Warne said.Warne will captain Victoria for the first time in three years, having regained the spot under new coach David Hookes. While delighted to be in the side when Berry sets the all-time Victorian record with 125 caps, he regrets their never having been together at Test level.”Darren Berry can pick what I bowl in my run-up – anything new, he knows exactly what I’m doing,” Warne said.”It’s probably a bit of a tragedy he’s never had the opportunity to play at higher honours.”If we didn’t have great keepers such as Ian Healy and Adam Gilchrist, he probably would have played 100 Tests by now for Australia.”Teams (12th men to be named):VICTORIA: Shane Warne (capt), Jason Arnberger, Darren Berry, Will Carr, Matthew Elliott, Ian Harvey, Shane Harwood, Brad Hodge, Mathew Inness, Nick Jewell, Jon Moss, Graeme Rummans.TASMANIA: Jamie Cox (Capt), Sean Clingeleffer, Graeme Cunningham, Gerard Denton, Michael DiVenuto, Michael Dighton, Shane Jurgensen, Daniel Marsh, David Saker, Shannon Tubb, Shane Watson, Damien Wright.

Sunderland given Robertson boost

A major update has emerged about Sunderland target Clark Robertson, regarding where he wants to play next season.

What’s the talk?

According to The Daily Record, Sunderland transfer target Robertson wants to stay in England. Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen were showing an interest in signing him on a free transfer from Rotherham, but the centre-back is now likely to join an EFL club instead.

Football Insider reported last month that Sunderland are one of the English sides looking to sign the defender this summer. His contract at Rotherham expires at the end of the month and he could become a free agent in July unless Paul Warne can tie him down to an extension.

Rotherham boss Warne hailed the defender as “unique” upon his arrival at The Millars in 2018 due to him being a left-footed centre-back. He told Rotherham’s official website:

“He’s a really good kid and he really wants to learn. He played a lot of games last year and the couple before that and I think he’ll fit in a treat. He can step in and play out from the back, which the league we’re going into will allow a little bit more and he’ll bring us a bit of calmness.

“I’ve known him for quite a while and he’s a left-sider, which is pretty unique. He can play and he was a huge part of the Blackpool team last year. He’s a good, strong, competitive centre half which fits in with what we’re looking for here.”

Get it done

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman must now sanction a deal for Robertson and get it done before any of their League One rivals can make a move. Speakman has to take this opportunity to snap up Robertson and bolster Lee Johnson’s squad, with Robertson wanting to stay in England a major boost for the Black Cats as it has ruled Aberdeen out of the race.

This means that there will not be any top-flight football clubs for Sunderland to have to compete against, with Robertson seemingly set to join a Championship or League One side.

Johnson is in a difficult position in regards to the centre-back position as it stands. Dion Sanderson has returned to Wolves at the end of his loan spell and Luke O’Nien is out of contract at the end of the month with no update on his future since the end of the campaign. This has left Bailey Wright as the only first-choice centre-back left at the club heading into next season, which is why Speakman must seal a swoop for Robertson.

The £3.4k-per-week enforcer can come in from Rotherham and be a reliable option at centre-back for Johnson. Robertson averaged an impressive WhoScored rating of 6.86 when starting at centre-back in the Championship, which shows that he is a solid defender in the EFL. He has also played in League One for Rotherham and Blackpool, earning promotion with the former back in 2020. He could be an excellent signing for the Black Cats and Johnson would love having him in his squad for the aforementioned reasons.
