The final of the Inter-Provincial Twenty20 tournament at the Premadasa Stadium turned out to be a thriller that was decided by the one-over eliminator. Ruhuna trumped Wayamba in the eliminator after a tie, and booked their place in the qualifier stage of the Champions League to be held in India later in the year.Opting to bat, Ruhuna lost some early wickets but opener Mahela Udawatte held firm, making 65 off 47 and controlling the innings from one end. He ceded the floor to Janaka Gunaratne when the pair got together at 51 for 3. Gunaratne was unstoppable, launching six sixes in his 83 that came off just 42 balls. He added 93 with Udawatte and 36 with Shaluka Karunanayake to propell his team to 198.There are several Sri Lankan internationals in the Wayamba line-up, the most experienced of them all, Mahela Jayawardene, fell cheaply in the chase. But Thilan Samaraweera and Thilina Kandamby, who was left out of the home series against Australia, struck half-centuries to lead a strong reply. Samaraweera opened the batting and made 57 in 37 while Kandamby struck four sixes in his 60. A crucial contribution came from Indika de Saram, who blitzed his way to an unbeaten 46 and levelled the scores even as offspinner Suraj Randiv grabbed three wickets in the final over.Randiv bagged a wicket off the penultimate ball but wicketkeeper de Saram smashed a boundary off the final ball to make it 198. His effort, however, went in vain, as Wayamba managed just six in their one over. Ruhuna chased it down off the penultimate ball to seal victory.

Daniel Vettori who led New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup, has been named the captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore for IPL 2011. Vettori, who was in the Delhi Daredevils line-up for the first three seasons, takes over from Anil Kumble, who has retired from the game, but will mentor the Bangalore team this year. Ray Jennings will continue to be the side’s coach.”Vettori is a hugely respected professional not only within his team but among his international peers as well,” Kumble was quoted in the team’s website. “His unique ability to get players to perform as a unit and deliver more than just the sum of their parts, as he has done time and again with New Zealand, will be a big asset to any team.”Jennings echoed Kumble’s views on Vettori’s leadership, and also touched upon his bowling abilities. “Vettori is probably the best spinner in the world at the moment and brings in tremendous skills that will be extremely useful on the Indian pitches,” Jennings said. “We hope that he will inspire the young Royal Challengers as much with his performance as with his leadership skills in the upcoming season.”Bangalore had a disastrous 2008 season, when they finished seventh in a field of eight teams, but fared much better in the next two editions of the IPL. They were losing finalists in 2009, and finished third in the 2010 edition. They also qualified for the first two editions of the Champions League, but failed to win the event on either occasion.”We are very excited for the upcoming season,” Vijay Mallya, the owner of the Bangalore franchise, said. “Vettori is a highly experienced and respected leader and we hope to ride to the pinnacle of success this IPL under his leadership.”Meanwhile, Deccan Chargers have announced that Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara will lead their side in the IPL. Sangakkara swaps the leadership role with former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist who has taken over as the Kings XI Punjab captain. Australia batsman Cameron White will be Sangakkara’s deputy, while Darren Lehman will continue to coach the Hyderabad-based franchise.

Ferguson replaces injured Marsh in ODI squad

Callum Fergsuon will join Australia’s one-day international squad ahead of Friday’s second match in Sydney after Shaun Marsh was ruled out due to a back injury

Callum Fergsuon will join Australia’s one-day international squad ahead of Friday’s second match in Sydney after Shaun Marsh was ruled out due to a back injury. Marsh made 31 in Australia’s one-wicket loss at the MCG on Wednesday, but he did not take the field at all during Sri Lanka’s innings and will miss the remaining two games in the series.”Shaun Marsh injured his lower back in the latter part of his batting innings yesterday against Sri Lanka,” the team physio Alex Kountouris said. “With the short turnaround between games in this series it was decided that the best management of this injury is to withdraw him from the remaining two games to allow him time to recover. His return to cricket will be based on his recovery over the next few days.”Marsh has had back troubles before, and a similar problem sidelined him for Australia’s one-day tour of New Zealand earlier this year. His latest niggle has opened the door for Ferguson, who was in the ODI squad in India last month but did not play a game, and is still waiting for his first appearance in Australian colours since seriously injuring his knee in the Champions Trophy final in October 2009.”Callum has been in extremely good form of late for South Australia in interstate cricket and has a very good one-day international record for Australia, averaging 46 with the bat, so we know he can perform well on a big stage,” the chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, said. Ferguson was due to link up with the squad in Sydney on Thursday, but his chances of playing on Friday are slim.Ricky Ponting will be back in the side having missed Wednesday’s game to attend his grandmother’s funeral, and Marsh would have been the likely man to make way for Ponting. The Australians haven’t got much time to turn around their form after losing a match they should have won comfortably at the MCG, and the coach Tim Nielsen said the players had a frank discussion after Sri Lanka’s triumph.”The most important thing is that we don’t run away from it, we identify the things we’re doing well and maybe not so well,” Nielsen said on the Melbourne radio station SEN. “We had a chat about that as a group last night, while it was very fresh and hitting pretty hard. Rather than just walk away and say ‘we got close’, we sat down and were pretty honest with each other about how we’re going and what we’re doing.”We just have to make sure that we don’t panic. There’s going to be a lot of speculation, there’s going to be a lot of theories and rumours and ideas on how we can get better. We just can’t afford to keep doing the same things like we did last night. We kept bowling bouncers that were chest high rather than head high, we bowled a few wides, we bowled a few slower balls that we didn’t land properly, and we didn’t really do anything out of the ordinary or different to what we’d been doing all night.”

Celtic: Ange struck gold with Kyogo

When joining Ange Postecoglou’s Celtic last July, the Parkhead faithful would have been forgiven for not being overly aware of the Bhoys’ new £4.6m signing Kyogo Furuhashi.

Indeed, having never played outside of Japan, and having made just 12 appearances for his national team, he was more than likely a name that very few had even heard of – let alone been aware of his ability – outside of his homeland.

However, just seven months down the line, Kyogo is not only a household name in Scotland – Japanese flags fly outside of pubs, restaurants and bars in and around Glasgow as a result of his popularity, while Premier League clubs are already reported to be taking an interest in the £18k-per-week hitman.

It is not difficult to see why this is the case. Over the centre-forward’s 26 appearances for the Bhoys, he has already bagged 16 goals and provided his team-mates with five assists. Many of these goal contributions have been crucial for the Bhoys, such as the 27-year-old’s match-winning brace in the Scottish League Cup final in December.

As a result of this breathtaking form, the striker’s Transfermarkt valuation has also dramatically increased since being thrown into the Celtic spotlight, jumping from £1.8m at the time of his arrival to £4.95m today – a 175% rise in just seven months.

However, considering just how important Kyogo has become to this Hoops team it would likely take an offer well into eight digits for Celtic to even consider parting with the forward in the summer transfer window.

Either way, there is only one man the Bhoys have to thank for the discovery of the player who John Hartson dubbed a “special” talent – Ange Postecoglou.

Indeed, the 56-year-old’s knowledge of untapped markets has already borne significant fruit for Celtic, with the likes of Reo Hatate and Liel Abada also thriving after moves to Parkhead. However, it is undeniably the 27-year-old Japanese forward who has proven to be the most valuable diamond in the rough for the Bhoys so far this season.

Raphinha twist emerges at Leeds United

Raphinha could yet stay at Leeds United this summer as a fresh twist has emerged…

What’s the word?

The 25-year-old’s future has been subject to a lot of speculation in recent weeks with his agent, Deco, thought to be in advanced talks with LaLiga giants FC Barcelona but according to Eurosport transfer insider Dean Jones, the Whites may be able to talk him into staying.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT this week, the journalist revealed a behind-the-scenes update, where he claimed that the Brazilian’s representatives have stated that they are open to him remaining at Elland Road, also adding:

“We’re not going to rule out the fact that he might leave Leeds but at the same time, if they could talk him into staying, then he might stay.”

Fresh twist in the tale

The Catalan outfit aren’t the only side keen on Leeds’ leading talisman.

As per the Mirror last month, the likes of Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Liverpool and even Newcastle United were named in the long list of potential suitors.

The same source suggests that Leeds have slapped a £60m price tag on the winger and have attempted to tie him down to a new deal.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-marsch-raphinha-dest-philhay” title=”Read the latest Leeds news!”]

His current £63k-per-week contract expires in the summer of 2024, having joined in a £17m deal from Stade Rennes in October 2020, which puts him as the third-highest earner at Thorp Arch behind Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo.

The west Yorkshire side have heavily relied on the £40.5m-rated dynamo, who has now been capped seven times by Tite’s Selecao, this season. He’s bagged a squad-leading ten goals and created more chances (58) than any other player too, via WhoScored.

Dubbed a “magician” by teammate Dan James earlier in the season, it would be absolutely huge if Leeds could keep hold of their star man, even if it’s just for one more season as he could continue to be a crucial influence under manager Jesse Marsch on that right flank.

It’s not as if the American head coach is littered with options in the role, despite links to both Ryan Kent and Brenden Aaronson.

This latest twist from reliable transfer insider Jones will provide many supporters with hope that this season isn’t the final time they see the hugely impressive Raphinha in a Leeds shirt.

AND in other news, Time’s up: “Non-existent” Leeds star loved by Bielsa must never play for Marsch again…
