Newcastle: Steve Bruce must axe underperforming flop Emil Krafth

Steve Bruce must show no mercy and wield the axe on Emil Krafth after the Newcastle United full-back endured a challenging afternoon against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Krafth was given a rare start at St. James’ Park for the visit of Slaven Bilic’s Baggies, having only opened two Premier League fixtures heading into the weekend and not been seen on the field at any stage since October.

Javier Manquillo has often been favoured for the right-back role when Bruce has chosen to name a four-man defence, but was not listed in the 18-man squad for the Toon’s 1-0 win whilst Bruce was without several of his regulars following an outbreak of coronavirus.

Bruce will be blessed with additional options when Newcastle visit Championship title-holders Leeds United on Wednesday night after DeAndre Yedlin made his campaign debut as a late substitute against West Brom.

Yedlin has been shunned to the fringes on Tyneside this term with Saturday’s inclusion in the matchday squad only his third appearance of the season, after Bruce openly admitted the United States international might find it hard to secure minutes as he enters the final year of his £30,000-per-week contract.

The 27-year-old could even leave Newcastle in January with club chiefs open to offers to avoid losing the man Rafa Benitez stated: “I love this player” for the speed he brought to the side.

Even if Bruce does not feel the same way about Yedlin as he continues to try and stamp his mark on the Toon first-team, the Newcastle boss cannot persist with Krafth in his line-up should Manquillo not be passed fit to face Leeds.

Krafth held the Magpies back in their efforts to beat West Brom on Saturday, as he once again made United’s £5million investment appear as nothing but a disastrous decision of Bruce’s first window in charge last year.

The 26-year-old arrived as a player previously praised for his physicality with Roar Hansen, who managed Krafth at both Osters and Helsingborgs, telling the Chronicle: “He developed very good, he played all the games.

“He is a physical, quick player. He improved with the ball at the time and he is not the most talented player I ever worked with, but he always worked hard. He always wanted to be better, always listened to the coaches and the more experienced players.”

Either Krafth is not listening to his coaches and the experienced heads in the Newcastle dressing room, or he simply is not cut out for Premier League football. He emptied the tank trying to make an impact against West Brom, but left the pitch in the 80th-minute to make the Toon better.

Krafth offered no successful tackles or interceptions during his time on the field, was dribbled past once and lost possession 15 times. He failed to find teammates with either of his four crosses or four long balls, and made just one successful dribble, per SofaScore.

Only 15 of his total passes were deemed to have been aimed forward in the final third, per WhoScored, while Matt Phillips was easily able to skip away from the 24-cap Sweden international before delivering a cross into the area for Darnell Furlong to score West Brom’s equalising goal.

Bruce simply must see that Newcastle cannot rely on Krafth if he hopes to take a result at Elland Road.

AND in other news, Mike Ashley’s January transfer stance could see Newcastle miss out on a £30m gem compared to Alan Shearer.

Arsenal must land Sheffield United midfield beast Sander Berge

According to Norwegian publication VG, Arsenal remain interested in Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge.

What’s the story?

The 22-year-old only joined the Blades earlier this year for a club-record fee, and has quickly established himself as a key part of Chris Wilder’s side, playing in every single Premier League game this season, including completing the full 90 minutes in the last eight.

Now, VG claim that Arsenal were actually very much interested in signing him before he ended up joining Sheffield United, but that his performances since his arrival at Bramall Lane have “definitely not harmed by his achievements in recent months”.

Can he be Arsenal’s next Vieira?

Standing at an imposing 6 foot 5, Berge has a lot of similarities to Arsenal legend, Patrick Vieira. The Frenchman of course was the captain during the Invincibles era, and led the Gunners to some incredible domestic successes.

Whilst Berge at 22 still has an awful long way to go to get anywhere near that level, he possesses a lot of the same characteristics that defined Vieira’s time at Arsenal. Tall, powerful and deceptively good with the ball, the Norwegian has got a game-changing dynamic to his game.

Taste of Football wrote in their analytical report about him: “The midfielder is a massive physical presence in midfield. His ability to shrug off anyone pressing him and almost glide beyond them is a joy to watch. The Norway international uses his strength to his advantage, allowing him to transition quickly from his own box into the final third. But Berge’s game isn’t reliant on his stature.

“On multiple occasions, he is seen skipping past the opposition, either with a flick around the corner or an elegant dribble. Hardly what you expect from such a giant in midfield. Berge also has finesse to his game. Reminiscent of a young Sergio Busquets, a testament to how easy he makes the game look.”

And if the Gunners needed any more reason to sign him, then they only have to listen to what Mikel Arteta’s assistant, Albert Stuivenberg, said about him. He lauded: “He is already very mature. He is intelligent, reads the game well, and takes the initiative. He has the potential to become a future leader.”

Berge has all the hallmarks of a young Vieira, and could be a superb signing for the north Londoners.

Bilic must salvage West Brom’s woeful defensive record by dropping Kyle Bartley

West Bromwich Albion could well be sat just one point off the bottom of the Premier League table by the time they return to action against Burnley on Monday night.

But it would be no more than what they deserve as Slaven Bilic’s side simply cannot stop leaking goals – in fact, no other team in the top-flight has conceded more than 13 times.

You have to go down to the doldrums of the Football League to see that only League One outfit Burton Albion and League Two strugglers Oldham Athletic match that number, so the Baggies have the tied-worst record in English professional football right now.

However, the Croatian is yet to tinker with his backline, which simply seems like a disaster waiting to continue.

Both Kyle Bartley and Semi Ajayi have struggled immensely with the step up to the Premier League with neither player managed above a 6.25 average rating on WhoScored.

The pair are even averaging the fewest amount of tackles per game at the moment, meaning even Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira are contributing more defensively and they are two players you certainly don’t expect to be tracking back.

Therefore, it’s time for Bilic to call upon ageing veteran Branislav Ivanovic as a risky throw of the dice, though let’s face it, he can’t be much worse than what’s happening at the moment.

The 36-year-old, if partnered with a quicker presence like Ajayi, could be the man to herald the backline and make it come together with his experience and leadership.

Jose Mourinho once lauded the Serb as one of his greatest ever signings at Chelsea, he said: “Is he one of the club’s best signings? I think so. He came immediately after I left [after my first spell in charge] and after that he made a fantastic contribution for this club. He is a competitive animal with a big heart.”

It’s players like this that Albion desperately needs right now – even at his old age – so Bilic must pull him off the bench with Bartley, unfortunately, making way.

Jack Grealish continues to show why he’s Daniel Levy’s greatest Spurs mistake

Tottenham Hotspur got a glimpse of what could have been on Thursday evening as former transfer target Jack Grealish put in a masterclass during a rare start for the England national team.

The summer of 2018 saw an intense saga develop as Spurs pursued the Aston Villa skipper with the cash-strapped Midlands outfit preparing for life in the Championship.

Sky Sports claimed that the now 25-year-old was in talks over a move throughout the summer whilst The Sun believe Villa were prepared to let Grealish go for just £6m.

They were in a race against time to pay off their debt to save the club from the prospect of administration but Daniel Levy held firm and believed he could get the star playmaker for £1m to £2m cheaper, a decision that soon turned out to be costly.

The Spurs chairman boarded the club’s flight to Los Angeles for their pre-season tour that summer but by the time he landed 11 hours later, billionaire duo Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens had saved the flailing Midlanders and subsequently upped the asking price to over £40m.

Grealish is thought to be worth in excess of £80m and that valuation was placeed upon him before he signed a lengthy contract extension last month, so he could be worth even more now.

And now he continues to show Levy exactly what a disaster his stubborn call was all those years ago.

The Villa dynamo was the Three Lions’ star man as they thrashed Wales 3-0 in a friendly – per Fotmob, Grealish recorded an 88% passing success rate, won four recoveries as well as 87.5% of his duels and enjoyed one key pass.

This has merely been a continuation of his red-hot form over the past 12 to 18 months.

He tore defending Premier League champions Liverpool apart at the weekend to make it three goals and three assists from just as many top-flight matches, which builds on his respectable 12 goal contributions last season, via WhoScored – 3.3 key passes and three shots per game for Villa is an absolute joke!

This form has led to high praise from Goal.com, who wrote: “He is an extraordinary talent; once-in-a-generation doesn’t go far enough. This is a player with the close control, first touch, and head-up vision of David Silva; the weaving dribbles and foul-drawing of Eden Hazard; the swaggering charisma and omnipresence that, to Villa fans at least, recalls George Best.”

Whilst in the past, ex-Villa striker Paul Merson has lauded Grealish as a “special player” adding: “He’s the best three or four-yard passer I’ve seen in the game for a long time.”

He has even been likened to Dele Alli by current boss Dean Smith. Oh, how badly Spurs have missed out here!

The north Londoners may have moved on with the likes of Giovani Lo Celso and Gareth Bale joining the club, but it can’t be denied, Grealish is a huge talent and one that should be playing in the Lilywhite strip in N17.

This may well not be the last time that Levy has to witness exactly why his tough-negotiating can sometimes do more bad than good for Tottenham Hotspur.

AND in other news, Jose Mourinho may have found his new Scott Parker in “talented” Spurs teen…

Newcastle United: Journalist thinks takeover will go through ‘soon’

A journalist for the Daily Mirror has made a rather big claim about the proposed takeover of Newcastle United, saying that ‘my guess is that it will go through. Soon.’

However, he also voice his frustrations at the delays that have come with the whole saga, and has urged both the Premier League and its chief executive Richard Masters so make their final decision soon.

As per the Mirror, the CEO of the top flight was put forward questions by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCSM) earlier on in the week as to whether he had any updates on the prospective £300 million deal between Mike Ashley and Amanda Staveley’s Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) led group.

However, Masters did not really offer any more clarity on the situation, leaving members of the Toon faithful to wait just that little bit longer before they know what exactly is going on higher up in the Tyneside club.

Indeed, the buying side are also still waiting for the result of the Owners’ and Directors’ Test (ODT) set out by England’s highest division, which will determine as to whether the consortium are deemed both fit and proper to take over the Magpies.

The would-be owners looking to move in alongside Staveley are KSA crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS) and his country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the billionaire Reuben brothers, who are based in London but are originally from India.

Still, it is anyone’s guess as to when an official announcement will be made by the league, leaving NUFC supporters twitching their thumbs. However, hearing from a reputable national newspaper journalist that they believe it will go through will surely encourage plenty of the Toon faithful.

Geordies, will the takeover decision be announced soon? Comment below!

Man Utd should cut their losses on Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Hands up if you had forgotten about Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

The Dutchman has been on the books at Manchester United for a long time now but has failed to really establish himself as a key part of the first-team since making a real breakthrough when Louis van Gaal was still in charge.

Speaking after a clash against Everton back in 2016 in which Fosu-Mensah replaced Marcos Rojo and delivered the cross for Anthony Martial’s winner, Van Gaal lauded the defender for seizing his opportunity.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “I think Rojo has a problem with his jet-leg. I said also to Timothy that you have to take profit of it, and when a player is doing that then that is also a little bit of luck for the manager. But I think every credit is with the player, for Timothy, and not for the manager.”

Under the former United boss, Fosu-Mensah played ten times, and then when Jose Mourinho came into the Old Trafford dugout, he also featured sporadically too, getting onto the pitch on 11 occasions.

But the £6.3m-rated ace has seen his progress hindered by injuries, not least by the cruciate ligament problem he suffered whilst on loan at Fulham last season – according to Transfermarkt, after making his return to action only in January 2020, he had missed 271 days of action, or 60 total games to be precise.

Defence is arguably the one area in which the Red Devils are seemingly well-stocked, with centre-back seeing a whole host of options being available for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe and Phil Jones, amongst others. And then, if you consider Fosu-Mensah’s ability to play at full-back too, he has Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Brandon Williams and Luke Shaw all ahead of him in the pecking order.

The path simply isn’t there for the Dutchman to really genuinely stake his claim in the first-team, and it’s exactly why United should cut their losses on the versatile ace. He may have promised big things after bursting onto the scene a few years ago, but he hasn’t shown why he is worthy of a place in the squad for next season.

Meanwhile, Man Utd are set to battle their Premier League rivals over this star.
